Profile Taking Root

Taking Root is a voluntary, non-profit organization based in Montreal, Canada. We believe that sustainable reforestation is more than simply planting a tree. In order to ensure the long-term viability of our programs, we take a community-based approach. Through Canadian-Nicaraguan partnerships,Taking Root supports and strengthens locally run reforestation projects in Nicaragua that demonstrate a strong holistic approach to development and environmental action. -- The challenge -- Deforestation is not a new process and the root causes are not simple, but its effects are felt worldwide. Increasing demand for agricultural land, cattle pastures and fuel wood are just some of the elements contributing to the issue. This destruction of forests, primarily in tropical regions, also accounts for approximately 17% of global carbon dioxide emissions, the principle contributor to global warming. Clearly, the reversal of this process will play an important role in addressing climate change. -- The Taking Root solution -- Taking Root believes that sustainable reforestation is a key solution to climate change. Reforestation improves the climate, the air, the water, the wildlife habitat, the soil and the lives of those around it. -- The approach: community forestry -- A successful reforestation project involves much more than simply planting trees. For this reason, Taking Root does not separate the human element from the situation. The organization's reforestation projects both recognize and support the needs of Nicaraguan communities as an integral part of a thriving ecosystem. This involves the integration of a realistic and intelligent reforestation model that accounts for the needs and culture of the local people. In this process, members of the participating communities are directly involved, and take ownership of the renewal of their own ecosystem. This ensures the long-term success of the project.
