The Silence of Tsunami

The Silence of Tsunami
On December 26th 2004, many parts of the world particularly South East Asia and South Asia became victims of powerful demolishing waves of Tsunami. It was perhaps one of the biggest challenges that the world witnessed.
Activist-filmmaker Vidya Bhushan Rawat visited many places in Tamilnadu and Pondicherry. language was the biggest barrier in his intereaction apart from a dubious effort to keep him off from the visiting the Dalits habitats. It was disgusting to see the activists and the charitable organizations ignoring the cry of Dalits and Women.

Charitable organizations or religious groups, all came to help the poor people in Tamilnadu and Pondicherry. Temples, mosques, Churches and sufishrines, were opened for the victims of Tsunami. The work done was great but none of them had the capacity to challenge the status quo. Some denied entry to women while others found their strength in escapism to address the Dalit issue. In the villages the major work of picking up dead bodies as well as garbage was done by Dalits, but they were the last in getting relief and rehabilitation.

And yet, this Tsunami's wave remained mute to gender and castle discrimination. Calamities give us opportunity to sink our differences and work for better future.
The film is made from a humanistic perspective and does not have any commentary.

The third part deals with the issue of environmenal degradation and its impact on the marginalised communities particular the fishermen and marginalised farmers. Most of the rivers in Poorvanchal are rottening with the industrial wastes from these factories spills into rivers and agricultural areas. Today thousands of hectares of fertile land in Kushinagar, Gorakhpur, Kaptanganj, Ramkola, and Chaurichaura is turned baren. The drinking water is a threat as it is thoroghly polluted. The suger mills and distillaries have played havoc with public life in these areas. During our Padyatra we tried to explore this issue of direct threat on livelihood through environmenal degradation.
