Global Wind Day kicks off with photo contest winners

Global Wind Day kicks off with photo contest winners

The hundreds of events being organised for the Global Wind Day on 15 June can be seen on a new, interactive Google map, which shows all the activities on offer at any location at the click of a mouse. Wind farm guided tours, conferences, exhibitions, workshops, information days, openings of new wind farms, regattas, marathons, theatrical shows are all on offer…and much more besides!

One of the first Wind Day activities drew to a close this morning with the announcement of the two winners of the Global Wind Day photo contest. David Depasse from Belgium’s photo was the favourite of the expert panel, made up of the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), the photo contest organisers and their partners, National Geographic and Samsung. Keith Flamée from the UK’s picture, on the other hand, won the public vote.

Keith Flamée - the public's choice

David Depasse - expert panel's choice

“The winning pictures show the aesthetic strength of wind turbines as symbols of modern technology and clean power in the midst of nature. In the most direct form possible, without words, these images show why the vast majority of European citizens support wind energy”, explained Christian Kjaer, EWEA Chief Executive. “We had a very high standard of entries overall and it wasn’t an easy decision, but I am very pleased with both the expert and the public choice of winner.

Depasse and Flamée will each win a Samsung camera: a NV9 and a GX20 respectively. 25 runners up will be sent a Global Wind Day goodie bag.
