Energy is an issue that unites us all because we are all consumers of it to a greater or lesser degree. With demand rising across the globe and alternative energy sources racing to develop and take a significant market share, there is still a lot of debate around how the next fifty years of the world's energy use will be accounted for. Here are some perspectives from those working on these challenges. |

Synopsis: In this video interview, recorded during the World Energy Congress 2010, Peabody Energy CEO Greg Boyce shares his point of view on the role of coal as an essential energy source for developing economies. Basing his arguments on the facts that a significant percentage of the world's population is still experiencing "Energy Poverty" Boyce claims that coal is the only cheap and readily accessible way to bring electricity to developing countries. For this reason, he believes that coal will remain a strong element of the world's energy mix for the next 50 years, though efforts will have to be made to burn it cleaner and capture carbon emissions.

Synopsis: Many of us, certainly the Canadians among us, have heard the criticisms leveled at the tar sands operations in Alberta, a western Canadian province that is fast becoming the "Saudi" of North America by media standards. In this video, a Syncrude worker presents a reclaimed tar sands site which, they claim, shows the possibility of restoring mining and extraction sites back to functional ecosystems once the operations are finished. Does this mean that the environmental impact is only temporary?
